Southeast Asia was definitely always on my list of places to go visit. I have heard of other travelers going through the triangle and how cheap it was and how much further your money could go so I thought it would be the perfect place to travel for a longer period of time after my visa expired in Australia and before coming back to the US. I had quit my job previously to live in Spain for a summer teaching English but I had a home base there in Madrid, so traveling through Southeast Asia for 4 months constantly being on the go was definitely a new experience for me.
I had planned it out based on the countries I wanted to go to within the time period I had. I spread it out around 3-4 days in each city starting in Indonesia and working my way up and around each country making the travel times between each city pretty short. I also avoided flip flopping in between countries because I figured it would make things pretty confusing trying to keep track of how many days I had left on my visa for each country. So I spent about two weeks to a month in each country and found that being plenty of time to see everything! Of course not everyone has the luxury to spend that much time in each country but hopefully this site will help you break it down a little to sort out which places seem more of an interest to you.
Overall, Southeast Asia is by far the cheapest part of the world I have traveled. South America is very cheap as well however flights within the country are ridiculously expensive compared to SEA which range from $35-$200 one way. People always ask me how I was able to travel for so long and money is always in question. For the total 4 months I spent about $7500 USD. That’s roughly $1800/month, $470/week, $65/day. Not too shabby considering this covered all transport, accommodation, and food for the duration of our trip. Although something to note which many people don’t understand is that we traveled on a budget. We were not staying at 4 or 5 star hotels and eating lavish dinners. We stayed in hostels and ate street food from time to time so you can understand that our money went a lot further. However if you do want to hit up the lavish lifestyle for a few weeks while only spending about a third of the price, then definitely put SEA on your list! You can live like Kings and Queens there!
